Determination and resilience are common traits for S&T students. In a year unlike any other, Miners adjusted to limited in-person gatherings and a disrupted athletic season. As shown in this multiple exposure photograph, Bryn Wooldridge pitched for six innings and allowed just four hits, picking up the win for S&T in the second game of a double-header against William Jewell. The sophomore from Salisbury, Mo., plans to major in architectural engineering.
On Feb. 25, 2020, 150 years and one day after former Missouri Gov. Joseph W. McClurg signed the legislation that created Missouri S&T, university officials, students, alumni and supporters celebrated the university’s founding at the State Capitol Building in Jefferson City, Mo.
Speakers talked about what S&T means locally and globally. Following the ceremony, attendees participated in hands‑on activities with Makerspace students and Dave Westenberg; toured an S&T pop‑up museum and archival display; and signed a six-foot-wide proclamation. On Oct. 12, the Miner football team recorded its fifth straight win of the season against NCAA Division I opponent Texas Southern University. The 23-20 victory was the Miners’ first win over a Division I team in 13 years. The win earned national media coverage and put Missouri S&T’s name in headlines in the Washington Post, the Houston Chronicle and USAToday. The Miners ended the season with a 7-4 record.

This Chinese dragon, carried by S&T students from China, was just one entry in the 10-block procession that formed the 2018 Parade of Nations, the kick-off event in S&T’s ninth annual Celebration of Nations. The celebration, which showcases the cultural diversity found in the Rolla community, features cultural performances and international food, among other entertainment.

The Missouri S&T Solar House Design Team finished in fourth place in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2017 Solar Decathlon, held Oct. 5–15 in Denver.
The team’s house, called SILO, was one of 11 entries in the design competition. Entries in the Solar Decathlon were judged by a panel of experts in 10 categories, ranging from appliances and architecture to energy use and market potential.
During the competition, members of the Order of the Golden Shillelagh, the university’s major donor society, toured the house as part of a weekend celebrating the organization’s 40th anniversary.
Missouri S&T was well-represented at Maker Faire Kansas City 2017 as it showcased its world champion Mars Rover Design Team, projects from the new S&T Makerspace, Joe Miner and an interactive Ozobot mission. Nearly 18,000 people attended the two-day, family-friendly event, which Missouri S&T helped sponsor.

The mechanical and aerospace engineering department turned a century old this year. To celebrate, the department unveiled new banners in Toomey Hall. The three banners feature the anniversary mark and depict scenes from the department’s past and its influence on the future.
Designed by sculptor Edwina Sandys and cut from Missouri red granite using waterjet technology developed at Missouri S&T, the 15-foot-tall Millennium Arch on the Castleman Hall lawn stands as a perfect example of the intersection of science and art.

Missouri S&T explosives engineering students lit up the night sky over Bertelsmeyer Hall with a custom-designed fireworks display set to music. The show served as a finale to the building’s dedication on Oct. 17.
Molten glass on the end of a rod is fused with glass granulates, known as frit, and then returned to the 1,250-degree-Celsius reheat furnace before the colored glass is shaped into the final product.
Missouri S&T’s 3-D printer, housed in Curtis Laws Wilson Library, lets students create complex shapes like this scale model of the Formula SAE car using layers of plastic filament. The full-size Formula car will compete in Formula SAE Michigan in May. It’s just one of many S&T design teams that compete every spring.
Founded 143 years ago as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Missouri S&T still graduates metallurgical engineers with hands-on experience working in the Robert V. Thirty-six teams of tech-savvy high school students designed and built remote-controlled robots to place plastic rings onto a peg rack in the center of a 12-foot diamond during the FIRST Tech Challenge, held at Missouri S&T on Feb. 23. This is the third year S&T has hosted the regional event.
Clisa LaBrell’s entry in a Trash Art contest sponsored by the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District at the 2013 Missouri S&T Earth Day Celebration held on campus on April 22. LaBrell was a seventh-grade student at St. George School in Hermann, MO. Just one example of S&T’s community outreach, the event feature Solar Village tours, contests and hands-on activities for hundreds of area youth, as well as our own S&T students.
