Former Miner places 14th at Pan-Am Games
Miner track and field standout Tyrone Smith finished 14th in the long jump competition during the 2007 Pan American Games held in July in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
Smith, who was competing for his native Bermuda in the international event, had a top jump of 24-0 1/4 (7.32 meters) to end up in 14th place. After fouling on his first jump, Smith had a leap of 23-6 in the second round and his top mark of the afternoon in round three.
Smith earned three All-America awards in the long jump while competing at UMR and holds the national record in the long jump for Bermuda, which he set at the North America-Central America-Caribbean Games held in the Dominican Republic last summer.
